Brussels Attacks: Ron Paul Delivers Dire Warning to Europe

Brussels AttacksRon Paul: Don’t Sacrifice Liberty for Security

Top Libertarian politician Ron Paul categorically rejected an idea floated in the wake of last week’s Brussels attacks that Europeans should give up liberties in exchange for security.

He made his comment during his Liberty Report show on Thursday in response to experts advising Europeans to surrender more of their liberties so that their governments can keep them safe.

“You never have to sacrifice liberty for safety,” he said. “If you give that up, you lose your ability to make yourself secure.”

“We’re not secure in our homes because there is a policeman standing out in front of our house protecting us; they don’t prevent crimes,” he added. (Source: “Ron Paul: Europeans Should Try Self-Defense Instead of Spying,Voice of Liberty, March 28, 2016.)

On March 22, three coordinated nail bombings occurred in Belgium: two at Brussels Airport in Zaventem and one at Maalbeek metro station in Brussels. In these attacks, at least 35 victims and three suicide bombers were killed, and more than 300 people were injured. Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The bombings were the deadliest act of terrorism in Belgium’s history.

Paul cited an article published in the Jerusalem Post that urged Europeans to be more like Israel to make themselves safe: “And they had some suggestions. [Which are] ‘you have to sacrifice a little bit of liberty.’ And of course, I don’t like that idea. I am a libertarian; I should never concede this,” Paul said.

Paul’s co-host, Daniel McAdams, said that whenever events like the Brussels attacks happen, “the so-called security experts come out of the woodwork.” They expose the important connection between the incidents and how they provide incentives for people in the business, who also influence government officials, to help more people understand the link between failed foreign policies and terrorism.

Another article in the Jerusalem Post warned that “without restoring a sense of public purpose, political authority, personal responsibility and social vitality—Christian Europe might be doomed.” (Source: “Foreign Affairs: The war ahead of Europe,Jerusalem Post, March 26, 2016.)

“Inward, Europe will have to tell its people that they are at war and that they must personally join it,” the author said.

Paul, a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and three-time presidential candidate, refused the idea altogether.

“We should not in any place in the world be willing to give up liberty,” Paul said.

“This world suffers from the lack of liberty, and the lack of understanding and the fear that lack of liberty would lead to chaos, quite frankly.

“It’s the chaos that we’re facing today that is coming about because we don’t understand and promote liberty.

“This is so bad that we are our greatest enemy when it comes to the protection of liberty,” Ron Paul concludes.
