People around the world need to understand a crucial point about US politics right now.
Most of the great controversies ongoing concern a feature of the American government about which most people only recently learned even though it has grown inexorably for a century: the power, reach, and sheer impenetrability of the administrative state and all of its vast outposts.
Nothing like this is mentioned in the Constitution, which is why dealing with this beast is so confusing. No one can really decide who is in charge of it. Judges opinions are all over the map because it has not been extensively litigated.
As an institution, it is vastly more powerful than any elected official, which means the operationally significant portions of the regime are not subject to any plebiscite.
This permanent leviathan has been hiding in plain sight for a century. Now that we see it, something has to be done about it, either scraped entirely or managed by the Chief Executive.
Oddly, huge interest groups prefer the status quo to those two options, but the status quo is unsustainable and impossible, because it is incompatible with the democratic ethos and also human freedom.
Therein lies the core upheaval of our times. It will have to be settled one way or another.
