2,000 U.S. Marshals Just Deputized In D.C., Here’s Why!

But back to a very serious story.

Did you know that 2,000 National Guard troops were just sworn in as Special Deputy U.S. Marshals yesterday?

It’s true, here’s the official U.S. Marshals post:

“So what?” you might ask….

What’s the big deal?

We already knew there were 25,000 troops in D.C., what is 2,000 more?

Well my friends, that just means you don’t understand what kind of troops these are.

These were already National Guard troops, already well equipped to keep the peace.

So you have to ask yourself what is different about being deputized as a U.S. Marshal?

In other words, why go to all the trouble?

Unless you gain something big.

And therein lies the answer.

Per 18 U.S.C. § 3053, U.S. Marshals and Deputies have the authority to arrest anyone WITHOUT a warrant for any offense against the United States.

There you go.

18 U.S. Code § 3053 – Powers of marshals and deputies

United States marshals and their deputies may carry firearms and may make arrests without warrant for any offense against the United States committed in their presence, or for any felony cognizable under the laws of the United States if they have reasonable grounds to believe that the person to be arrested has committed or is committing such felony.

Here’s more on the story from the Arlington Cardinal:

U.S. Marshals at 8:00 a.m. Monday January 18, 2021 announced that 2,000 National Guard troops were sworn in as Special Deputy U.S. Marshals.

The official Twitter account of the U.S. Marshals posted photos showing Chief Lamont Ruffin from D.C. District Court swearing in 2000 National Guard troops as Special Deputy U.S. Marshals prior to the upcoming presidential inauguration.

The tweet was posted the morning after U.S. defense officials announced they are worried about an insider attack or other threat from actual service members in the National Guard that are involved in the security of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. Deputation gives the guardsmen temporary, limited, law enforcement authority pertaining specifically to the safety and protection of the inauguration and related events.

According to officials, the FBI is vetting 25,000 National Guard service members at the Washington D.C. inaugural, where there is concern that there is a threat to the president-elect.

FBI vetting would involve running service member’s names through databases and watchlists maintained by the FBI to see if anything alarming comes up connected to prior investigations or terrorism-related concerns, according to David Gomez, a former FBI national security supervisor in Seattle.

Officials interviewed Monday morning said there have not been any evidence of any threats.

The vetting of the National Guard troops began deploying to D.C. more than a week ago, and was set for completion by Wednesday.
