ALBANY — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Tuesday announced he would enact a state of emergency for gun violence, declaring it a second epidemic that New York must face the way it did COVID-19. It’s the first such emergency order for gun violence of any state in the country, Cuomo said.
Two weeks ago, Cuomo repealed the COVID-19 state of emergency with much fanfare. The extraordinary move comes as polling last week showed the governor to be unpopular among New Yorkers, with a majority in Siena College’s poll last week saying he should not run again for reelection, although most approved of his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
